5. Check whether it is a sticker. A QR on a pasted label over the printed carton is a red flag independent of whether it scans.
6. Check the other cartons. If one code in forty fails, that is probably damage. If several fail across the same delivery, that is a pattern.

The distinction that matters

A damaged genuine code and a fabricated fake code both fail to scan, but they look different under inspection. Damage is localised — a crease, a scuff, a tear across part of the pattern, with the rest of the label sharp. A counterfeit code is uniformly soft, because the whole label was reprinted from a photograph and lost definition in the process. Hold the carton at arm's length and compare the QR against the small print next to it; the difference is usually visible without magnification.

What to do when it still will not scan

• Do not pay for that carton. An unverified box is an unverified box, whatever the explanation.
• Ask for a replacement carton from the same delivery and scan that one. A genuine seller will swap it without argument.
• Open it and try the inner code. An outer code damaged in transit will often sit alongside a perfectly readable inner one, which resolves the question immediately.
• Check the physical evidence. The printed markings along the insulation and the copper at a cut end are independent of any code, and a counterfeiter has to get those right separately.
• Escalate if the seller resists. Reluctance to replace an unscannable carton is more informative than the failed scan itself.
