Mount Cable vs a Wholesale Electrical Shop: Is 'Wholesale' Finolex Actually Cheaper?
A wholesale electrical shop in Bangalore is not automatically cheaper than an authorised Finolex distributor, because genuine Finolex wire moves through the authorised chain on a 3 to 5% margin that leaves almost nothing to cut. Mount Cable India sells at distributor prices, which are already the level most wholesale shops buy at, publishes them, and adds verification before payment and a GST invoice in your name. A wholesale quote meaningfully below that price is not a better deal; it is a different product.
What "wholesale" means in the electrical trade
In Chickpete, SP Road and the other market streets, a wholesale shop is one that mainly sells to other shops, electricians and contractors rather than to households. It moves volume, works on thin margins, keeps costs low and usually sells against cash. Some wholesale shops are authorised Finolex dealers. Many are not, and buy from whichever distributor, importer, agent or other wholesaler offers the best price that week. Both kinds trade under the same word.
Mount Cable is itself in Chickpete, at 10/3 Sri Complex, BVK Iyengar Road, so this is not a comparison between the market and somewhere far from it. It is a comparison between two ways of running a shop on the same street.
Where the wholesale price actually comes from
An authorised distributor buys from Finolex and sells on a 3 to 5% margin. A wholesale shop that is not a distributor buys from one, so its cost is already the distributor's price plus a little. To undercut the distributor it has three options: take almost no margin on volume, which happens and is legitimate; source from outside the authorised chain, where the coil's history is unknown; or sell something that is not genuine. The first is a real saving of a percent or two. The second and third are the ones that produce the quotes people get excited about.
| Wholesale quote vs published distributor price | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Within a few percent | A genuine wholesaler on thin margin; buy and scan |
| Around 10% below | Ask where it came from; scan both codes before paying, every carton |
| 15% or more below | Short copper, short coil or counterfeit; the 3 to 5% margin cannot produce this |
The dealer price vs retail price post shows how narrow the honest gap is.

The cash memo problem
A wholesale price for cash without a GST invoice is a quote for a product with no paper trail. If the coil turns out to be wrong, you have no document naming the range, the size or the seller, and Finolex has nothing to act on. The saving on tax is real and the loss of recourse is also real. For wire that will be concealed for thirty years, we think the second outweighs the first, and we sell only on a GST invoice for that reason.
When the wholesale market is the right call
- You are a contractor buying in volume, you know the ranges by sight, and you scan every carton anyway.
- The shop is an authorised Finolex dealer and shows the certificate.
- The quote is within a few percent of the published distributor price and you get a GST invoice.
In all three cases you are getting a genuine product at a fair price, and we would not talk you out of it. Where it goes wrong is when a house builder walks into the market for the first time, hears a number 20% below everything else, and pays cash for it.
The check that settles it, wherever you buy
Every Finolex carton carries two QR codes. The outer code is printed on the carton label next to the size, grade, length and batch number; scanning it opens Finolex's own verification page and confirms the carton is registered. The inner code is inside the box and can only be reached after opening it; it confirms the contents are what Finolex packed. Both must pass. A genuine carton can be emptied and refilled, in which case the outer code still verifies and only the inner code fails. Do both scans at your own site, before paying. The step-by-step guides are here: outer QR and inner QR.
Three questions worth asking any seller, including us
- Are you an authorised dealer for Finolex, and can I see the certificate?
- Can I scan the outer and inner QR on every carton before I pay?
- If a coil turns out to be wrong in eight months, who fixes it?
The answers, and how quickly they come, tell you most of what you need to know.
