1. The inner QR code

2. The copper

Cut fifty millimetres off a coil and look at the conductor end. Count the strands, look at their thickness, and look at the colour. Copper is the expensive part of a wire, so it is the part a counterfeit economises on — a coil marked 1.5 sq mm carrying 1.2 sq mm of copper looks identical, weighs slightly less, and cannot carry its rated current. Under load it runs hot, its insulation ages a decade in two years, and the failure mode is a fire inside a wall.

3. The insulation markings

Genuine house wire carries repeating printed markings along its length. Counterfeits reproduce these, but rarely with the same consistency — spacing drifts, characters smudge, and stretches go missing. Unroll a metre and look. The detail is in reading the markings on the wire.

4. The price

What a duplicate actually costs you

This is not a quality debate about longevity. Under-specification copper cannot carry the current the marking claims, so a circuit that should run cool runs warm every summer. Insulation ages under heat. The cable is inside a wall, so nothing is inspected, nothing is noticed, and the fault presents years later as a burning smell or a tripped main at two in the morning. The saving on a whole house is a few thousand rupees against a risk nobody would accept if it were visible.
