Making sure Gold is actually Gold
Premium tiers attract counterfeiting for an obvious reason: the packaging change is cheap and the price difference is not. So the verification matters more here, not less.

Both codes matter, and the reason is specific: a genuine carton can be emptied and refilled with duplicate wire. In that case the outer code still verifies perfectly and only the inner code fails. Scanning the outer code alone is an incomplete check, and the people who refill cartons are counting on you stopping there.
Scan the outer code, open the carton, scan the inner code, and check that what the verification reports — range, size, grade, batch — matches what is printed in front of you.
