Both codes matter, and the reason is specific: a genuine carton can be emptied and refilled with duplicate wire. In that case the outer code still verifies perfectly and only the inner code fails. Whatever you decide, apply the price test. Genuine branded wire runs on a 3 to 5 per cent dealer margin, because most of a coil's cost is the copper inside it and copper has a market price every honest seller pays. So a local quote 15 or 20 per cent below the market is not a bargain — the gap is funded from inside the coil, by copper shortfall, a short coil, or a counterfeit.
