How Some Electricians and Contractors Overcharge on House Wiring
Most electricians and contractors in Bangalore are honest tradespeople doing skilled work for fair money. A minority are not, and the ways they take money out of a house wiring job are consistent enough to list. If you are building, the single decision that removes almost all of it is to buy the wire and switchgear yourself, in your own name, independently of whoever is installing it.
The seven patterns
The recommended shop
You are told which shop to go to, and it happens to be the one paying a commission on whatever you spend. The advice sounds practical — they know the stock, they will give you a good rate — and the commission is added to your bill without appearing on it. Test it by getting a second quote from a shop nobody recommended.
Ordering extra, keeping the balance
The estimate is generous, the site over-orders, and the leftover coils leave with the person who ordered them. Wire is the favourite because it is high value, easy to carry and impossible for you to count once installation starts. The fix is to order roughly 90% of the estimate and top up — material is available next day, so surplus buys you nothing.
The brand only available at one shop
A brand you have not heard of is strongly recommended, and it turns out to be stocked only at the shops they deal with. Sometimes it is a perfectly decent product; often it is a margin structure. Ask why that brand, and whether the same specification is available from a manufacturer you can verify independently.
Excess billing with substituted material
You are billed for a premium grade and supplied something else. This works because grade is invisible once the wire is in the wall, and because the bill is often in the contractor's name rather than yours. A GST invoice in your own name, listing brand, size, grade and quantity per line, closes it.
Mixed genuine and duplicate stock
This is the one most buyers never think of. A delivery arrives, you scan a few cartons, they verify, and you relax. But some sellers mix stock deliberately — the coils on top are genuine and scan perfectly, and the ones underneath do not. Scanning five cartons out of forty proves five cartons. Scan the outer QR on every carton, and open a random quarter of them to scan the inner QR inside the box. Take them from the middle of the stack, not the top.
Switches: the parts nobody checks
Plates and switch modules are visible and get chosen carefully. Fan regulators and 32A DP switches are neither — they sit in a board or behind a plate and nobody looks at them again. Duplicates of exactly those items are used to recover margin elsewhere on the job. Check the modules, not just the plates, and buy switchgear in sealed boxes.
The with-material contract
Not a scam in itself, and plenty of contractors run it honestly. But it is the structure inside which every pattern above becomes easy and invisible, because the person choosing the material is the person keeping the difference, and the material disappears into a wall before anyone inspects it.
The decision that removes most of it
Buy the wire and switchgear yourself, in your own name, from an authorised dealer, independently of the electrician. Let the contractor quote labour and handle small consumables. This is not an accusation against your electrician — it simply removes the incentive entirely, without anyone having to have an awkward conversation.
Take his advice on brand and specification. He knows the trade and his preference is usually well founded. Just make the purchase, the invoice and the verification yours.
A checklist for the delivery day
- GST invoice in your own name, itemised by brand, size, grade and quantity.
- Sealed cartons only. No loose or cut wire, ever.
- Scan the outer QR on every carton, not a sample.
- Open a random quarter and scan the inner QR — from the middle of the stack.
- Check 4.0 sq mm is on the invoice if the house has air conditioners or a geyser.
- Check the switch modules — fan regulators and DP switches — not only the plates.
- Pay after everything verifies, not before.
- Keep the cartons until the job is finished.

A word for the honest majority
Everything above describes a minority. Good electricians lose work to this behaviour too, because it makes customers suspicious of the whole trade. An electrician who encourages you to buy independently, gives you a specification rather than a shop, and is happy for you to verify the material is telling you something useful about himself.
