How to Identify Duplicate Anchor Switches (Penta and Roma)
Penta and Roma are arguably the most recognised switch series in India, which makes them the most profitable to counterfeit. A fake switch is even more dangerous than a fake wire in one respect: you touch it every day. Substandard contacts arc, heat and pit; brittle plates crack; and the failure happens at your fingertips. Buyers rarely inspect a switch beyond its face, and counterfeiters rely on exactly that habit. Anchor by Panasonic, to be clear, is the victim here — the copies trade on quality the brand actually delivers.
Hold the switch, then judge it
- Fit and finish. A genuine Anchor switch feels solid and operates with a clean, positive click. Duplicates often feel light, gritty or spongy in action.
- Plate alignment. Genuine plates sit flush, with uniform gaps and no warping. Misaligned modules and uneven gaps are a manufacturing tell.
- Brand embossing on the back. Turn the switch over. Genuine units carry clean, sharp brand embossing and ratings moulded into the body. Shallow, blurry or misspelt embossing is decisive evidence.
- Series name printed correctly. Penta and Roma should be spelt and styled exactly right on the product and the box. Counterfeiters get typography wrong surprisingly often.
- Packaging. Crisp print, correct colours, accurate spelling, intact inner trays. Where Anchor provides a hologram or QR-based verification on the pack, use it at the counter.
The price test
Switches are bought in dozens, so a few rupees per unit feels trivial — and that is how fakes get in. Keep the arithmetic in mind: the electrical trade runs on 3 to 5 percent margins, so no genuine seller can go far below market on Anchor. A per-piece price that looks like a steal across a 60-switch order is the classic duplicate signature. Compare rates at two or three shops before deciding.
The channel test
Buy from authorised dealers and distributors, ask to see the authorisation certificate, and insist on a GST bill naming Anchor and the series. Unbilled switch stock is where the counterfeit supply chain lives; our piece on original vs duplicate electrical products explains the wider pattern.
