Spotting Duplicate GM Modular Switches: What to Look For
GM Modular built its name on design — plates and finishes that home owners choose the way they choose tiles. Counterfeiters love design-led brands because a fake only has to look right in the showroom for thirty seconds; it does not have to survive ten years of daily switching. The internals are where duplicates cut cost: weaker contacts, thinner silver plating, brittle polymers. None of that is visible at purchase, which is why you need a method rather than an eye.
Checks that work at the counter
In your hand
- Fit and finish: genuine GM switches assemble tightly, with plates sitting flush and gaps even all around. Warped plates, rattling modules or rough moulding edges are warnings.
- Switch action: a clean, positive click. Spongy or scratchy operation suggests substandard internals.
- Embossing on the back: turn the module over and look for sharp, correctly spelt brand embossing and moulded ratings. Blurry or shallow embossing is the single most reliable giveaway on switches.
- Series name: the series should be printed exactly right on both product and packaging — wrong fonts and misspellings are common on copies.
On the box
- Sharp print, correct brand colours, no spelling errors in the fine text.
- Where GM Modular provides a hologram, QR code or scratch-verification feature, verify it before paying.
The price test
Electrical distribution runs on 3 to 5 percent margins. That means no genuine seller can price GM Modular far below the prevailing market — the room simply does not exist. When one shop's quote is dramatically cheaper than two or three others for the same series, you are looking at the standard signature of duplicate stock. The discount is the warning.
The channel test
Insist on buying through authorised dealers. Ask to see the dealer's authorisation certificate for the brand, and take a GST bill that names GM Modular and the series ordered. A seller who discourages billing is quietly removing your only proof of purchase. Background reading: original vs duplicate electrical products.
