How to Spot Duplicate KEI Wire Before It Goes Into Your Walls

An electrician once told us the most expensive wire is the one you buy twice — first the fake, then the genuine replacement after rewiring the whole flat. KEI, with its strong industrial and projects pedigree, has become a sought-after name in house wiring, and demand like that always attracts counterfeiters. The fraud works because the product is invisible after installation: nobody chips open plaster to check what brand is actually inside the conduit.

Two minutes of checks at the counter

On the wire

• Pull out a few metres and read the printing: the KEI brand name, the size in sq mm, and the ISI or standards marking should be printed sharply and evenly along the length.
• Confirm the metre marking is sequential. This one habit defeats both counterfeits and short-length coils in a single stroke.
• Look at the exposed copper. Genuine conductor is bright and consistent strand to strand.

On the pack

• Check print quality and spelling on the label and carton. Counterfeit printing is usually the first thing to slip — blurry edges, wrong shade, a misspelt word in the fine print.
• Where KEI provides a hologram, QR code or scratch-verification feature on the packaging, verify it before paying, on your own phone, not the seller's.
• Factory coils are wound tight and even; a loose, hand-rewound coil has a story you do not want to be part of.

Let the price do the talking

Here is the check that works even if you know nothing about wire. Electrical distribution is a 3 to 5 percent margin trade. A genuine seller has no room to quote far below market — the arithmetic does not exist. So when one shop's KEI price is a "steal" compared to two or three others, that gap is the duplicate's signature, not a bargain.
