Duplicate Legrand MCBs and RCCBs: The Checks That Matter Most

Of everything counterfeiters copy, the MCB is the most cynical. A fake wire is a slow hazard; a fake breaker is a betrayal — a device whose only job is to trip during a fault, built by someone who never intended it to. Legrand breakers are copied because they sit in almost every serious distribution board specification, and because a DB, once closed, is a cupboard nobody opens. You cannot test a breaker's fault performance at the counter, so you must verify everything you can see.

What to verify on the breaker itself

• ISI / standards mark. Genuine MCBs carry the applicable standards marking clearly on the front face. Absent, smudged or crooked marking is disqualifying.
• Rating printed on the front. The current rating (6A, 10A, 16A, 32A) and curve (B or C) must be printed sharply on the face. Fuzzy or misaligned printing is a manufacturing tell.
• Breaking-capacity marking. Genuine breakers state their breaking capacity (for example 10kA) on the front. Counterfeits often omit it or print it inconsistently across pieces.
• Serial and date codes. Look for moulded or printed serial and date coding on the body. Identical codes across every piece in a box suggest copies.
• Terminal quality. Open the terminal screws: genuine units have clean, well-machined terminals and screws that turn smoothly. Rough, burred terminals and gritty screws betray cheap manufacture.
• Body and packaging. Crisp brand printing, correct spelling, solid moulding without flash lines; and where Legrand provides a hologram, QR code or scratch-verification feature on the pack, use it before paying.

The price test

The electrical trade runs on 3 to 5 percent margins, and breakers are no exception. A genuine seller cannot quote Legrand MCBs or RCCBs far below the market — so a steal price on protection devices is the classic duplicate signature, and the worst possible place to accept it. Compare two or three shops as a habit.

The channel test

Buy protection devices only from authorised dealers and distributors. Ask to see the authorisation certificate, and insist on a GST bill naming Legrand and the exact ratings supplied — your electrician and your insurer may both need it one day.
