How to Identify Duplicate Orbit Wire: A Field Checklist

Counterfeiters do not only copy premium brands. Value-focused names like Orbit get faked too, because the counterfeit game is about margins, not prestige: print a known label on cheaper copper and pocket the difference. And since wire disappears into conduits the day it is installed, the buyer has no way of discovering the switch until the wiring runs hot years later. Orbit, like every legitimate manufacturer, is a victim of this trade — the fraud is entirely the counterfeiter's.

Read the wire before you read the price tag

• Length printing: genuine wire carries the Orbit brand name, the size in sq mm and the applicable ISI or standards marking printed clearly and evenly along the insulation. Faint, patchy or irregular print is your first warning.
• Metre marking: draw out several metres and confirm the numbers run in sequence. Duplicates often repeat numbers; short-length coils skip them.
• Copper check: at the cut end, genuine copper is bright and uniform. Grey, dull or uneven strands mean walk away.
• Packaging print: sharp logos, correct spelling, familiar colours. Counterfeit cartons are almost always slightly wrong — fuzzier print, a different shade, a typo in the fine text.
• Brand verification: where Orbit provides a hologram, QR code or scratch-verification feature on the pack, use it at the counter before paying.

The price test matters even more here

With a value brand, buyers expect a low price — and counterfeiters exploit exactly that expectation by going lower still. Remember the arithmetic: electrical distribution survives on 3 to 5 percent margins, so even for a value brand there is a floor below which no genuine seller can go. Compare two or three shops. If one quote is far beneath the others, that is not a deal; it is the standard duplicate signature.

The channel test

Buy from established dealers who can show authorisation for the brands they carry, and insist on a GST bill naming Orbit and the exact item.
