Duplicate Polycab Wire Is Everywhere: Here Is How to Catch It

When a brand becomes the largest wire and cable maker in the country, two things follow: everyone asks for it by name, and counterfeiters start printing its logo. Polycab is a victim of its own success. The people who copy it rely on a simple fact — wire is judged by its label, bought in a hurry, and then buried inside conduits where no one can inspect it for the next twenty years.

Start with the wire itself

Ignore the box for a moment and read the conductor's insulation. Genuine Polycab wire is printed along its length with the brand name, the conductor size in sq mm, the relevant ISI or standards marking, and running metre numbers in clean sequence. On duplicates the print is often faint, unevenly spaced, or the metre numbers repeat. Ask the shop to pull out three or four metres and read it with your own eyes before billing.

Then examine the packaging

  • Print sharpness: genuine cartons and labels are printed crisply; fakes look slightly washed out or off-colour.
  • Spelling and fonts: counterfeiters routinely get small details wrong — a letter spaced oddly, a word misspelt on the rear panel.
  • Verification features: where Polycab provides a hologram, QR code or scratch-based check on the pack, use it before you pay. Never accept "the sticker is damaged" as an excuse.
  • Coil condition: factory coils are tightly and uniformly wound. Loose, rewound coils suggest tampering.

The price test never lies

This is the check that requires no expertise at all. Electrical trade margins are 3 to 5 percent, which means a genuine seller simply cannot go far below the prevailing market rate. When one shop quotes dramatically less than everyone else for the same Polycab item, that discount is not generosity — it is the standard signature of duplicate stock. Compare two or three shops and be suspicious of the outlier.

The channel test

Genuine Polycab flows through authorised dealers and distributors with proper paperwork. Ask the seller to show their authorisation certificate for the brand, and insist on a GST bill that names Polycab and the exact catalogue item. A seller who resists billing is not saving you tax; he is removing the evidence. Our article on original vs duplicate electrical products covers why the bill matters so much in a warranty or fire-insurance situation.
