Is That V-Guard Wire Genuine? A Buyer's Checklist

Would you notice if the V-Guard coil handed across the counter was a fake? Most buyers would not, and counterfeiters know it. V-Guard has earned deep trust in South Indian households, which makes its name valuable to copy — and because wire vanishes into walls the day it is installed, a duplicate can hide for years before it fails. Substandard copper runs hot, insulation degrades, and by then the seller is untraceable.

What genuine V-Guard wire looks like

Every legitimate coil gives you several things to verify before money changes hands:

  • Continuous printing on the insulation — the V-Guard name, wire size in sq mm, and the ISI or standards mark, printed sharply and at regular intervals along the length.
  • Sequential metre marking — numbers that climb steadily as the wire is drawn out. Repeated or missing numbers are a classic fake tell, and they also expose short-length coils.
  • Clean packaging — correct spelling everywhere, sharp logo printing, and colours that match what you have seen before. Counterfeit cartons are usually a shade off.
  • Brand verification where provided — if the pack carries a hologram, QR code or scratch-verification feature from V-Guard, use it at the counter, not after you reach home.
  • Bright, uniform copper at the cut end. Dull or greyish strands point to recycled metal.

Two tests that need no technical eye

The price test

Electrical is a 3 to 5 percent margin business. That single fact is your best protection: a genuine dealer cannot sell V-Guard far below market and stay in business, so an unbelievably low price is the surest counterfeiting signature there is. Collect quotes from two or three shops. Respect the consensus price; interrogate the outlier.

The channel test

Buy from authorised dealers or distributors, ask to see their authorisation certificate, and insist on a GST bill naming V-Guard and the specific item. The paper trail is what protects your warranty and your insurance claim. Our explainer on checking dealer authorisation shows what a genuine certificate looks like — the same logic applies to every brand.

Benchmark before you buy

V-Guard is part of Mount Cable's regular stock in Bengaluru, along with Finolex, Polycab, RR Kabel and KEI, so our counter price is a reliable market reference. WhatsApp your full list to +91 88676 76700 and we will return an exact quote within 60 minutes — no obligation to purchase from us. If the shop you are standing in quotes far below that distributor reference, put the coil down and walk out.
